A delay in marriage is a timing question before it is a dosha question. In most charts brought to me for this, nothing is broken: the seventh house is reasonable, the chart is capable of a good marriage, and the period that would bring it has simply not started yet. The kundli is read on four points, the seventh house and its lord, the condition of Venus or Jupiter, any affliction by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, and the mahadasha and antardasha running now. Three of those describe the marriage. Only the fourth describes when.
The question keeps coming up because families are usually given a label first and an explanation never. Someone says manglik, or names a dosh, and the conversation stops there. This guide sets out what I actually look at, in the order I look at it, what each finding means, and which remedies are worth the effort. Also written vivah me deri, and asked most often as late marriage.
The four things I read before saying anything
A marriage reading that begins with a remedy has skipped the work. These four come first, and in this order.
- The seventh house and its lord. The house of marriage and partnership, and more importantly the planet that rules it: where it sits, which house it has gone to, and whether it is strong there.
- Venus in a man’s chart, Jupiter in a woman’s. The classical significators for the spouse. A weak or afflicted significator often matters more to the question than the seventh house itself.
- Affliction by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu. On the seventh house, on its lord, or on the significator. This is where a real cause of delay is usually found, and it tells you what kind of delay it is.
- The mahadasha and antardasha running now. The Vimshottari period decides when a promise in the chart is delivered. A chart can promise marriage and stay quiet for years because the wrong dasha is running.
Only after those four do I look at Mangal Dosh and the rest. A full reading of all of this together is what the kundali analysis covers, and the seventh house is explained in more detail in the guide to the 12 houses in a kundli.
Which planet causes delay in marriage
People ask this as though there is one answer. There are three common ones, and they behave differently enough that the remedy changes with each.
| What is afflicting | How the delay usually behaves | What the chart is asking for |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn on the seventh house, its lord or the significator | Marriage comes later rather than not at all, often after a period of responsibility or work abroad, and often to a steadier, older or more serious partner | Patience and Saturn practice. Saturn delays, it does not deny |
| Rahu on the same points | Not so much delay as churn: proposals that appear and dissolve, unconventional matches, families that cannot agree | Settling the decision rather than hastening it |
| Ketu on the same points | Detachment. The person is not unwilling but not moved, and the matter keeps being postponed from the inside | Clarity about whether the delay is external at all |
| A weak or combust Venus or Jupiter | The chart is willing but the matches on offer feel wrong, and nothing settles | Strengthening the significator, by practice first |
| Seventh lord in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house | Distance, disputes or matches that come from far away, often with a genuine late start | A careful match reading before agreeing to anything |
Saturn is the one people mean when they say late marriage. It is worth saying plainly that Saturn on the seventh is not a misfortune. In many of these charts the marriage that eventually arrives is the more durable one. If Saturn is heavy in your chart generally, the guide to Sade Sati explains how its longer cycles work.
Saturn delays, Rahu scatters, Ketu detaches. Knowing which of the three is on your seventh house changes the remedy completely, and none of the three means marriage will not happen.
Is Mangal Dosh the reason?
Usually not, and I say this after many charts where the label had frightened a family for years. Mangal Dosh describes friction in married life rather than the timing of the marriage itself, and most charts that carry it also carry a cancellation that nobody checked. The cancellation rules, and how to check them yourself, are in the guide to Mangal Dosh and what it really means.
Where a genuine, uncancelled Mangal Dosh sits alongside a Saturn affliction, the two are read together and the delay is usually the Saturn part. Treating the Mars part alone, which is what happens when a label is given without a reading, leaves the actual cause untouched.
The dasha decides when, not the dosha
This is the part that is almost always missing from what people have been told. The Vimshottari dasha system divides a life into planetary periods, and marriage arrives in a period connected to the seventh house, its lord, or the significator. A chart with a clean seventh house can be quiet for six or seven years simply because a period unrelated to marriage is running, then settle the matter within months when the right antardasha begins.
That is why I do not give remedies to force timing. When I read a chart for this question, what I am looking for is the window: which period ahead carries the promise, and what can sensibly be done before it and during it. A family that knows the window stops making decisions out of panic, which is itself worth more than most remedies.
It is also why the birth time matters so much here. A few minutes can move the ascendant, which moves the seventh house and every house lord with it. If your birth time is uncertain, tell me at the start rather than after the reading.
Remedies, in honest order
Nothing on this list is a guarantee, and nothing here removes a period that has not arrived. Remedies settle the mind, strengthen what is weak in the chart and remove obstacles that are actually present. They work in this order, and the order matters more than the individual item.
- Verify the chart first. Birth date, exact time and place. Half the marriage delay questions I am asked change shape once the chart is cast correctly.
- Observe the practice for the planet actually involved. Saturn practice on Saturdays where Saturn is the cause, Thursday practice and Jupiter observances where the significator is weak. Doing Mars remedies because someone said manglik is the common waste of effort.
- A puja where the chart shows a real affliction. Navagraha Shanti where several planets are involved, or a planet-specific puja where one is. I perform these at homes across Mauritius and on a client’s behalf where the family is abroad, as part of the pooja and rituals service.
- Match properly when a proposal comes. The free kundli matching tool gives the 36 guna score, and the guide to guna milan explains what the score does and does not decide. A low score is a reason to look closer, not a verdict.
- Gemstones last, and only after a reading. A stone worn for the wrong planet strengthens the wrong thing, which is the opposite of what was wanted. The gemstone guide sets out which stone belongs to which planet.
For what the ceremony involves and how to prepare, read Navagraha Shanti puja. What I will not do is tell you that a ritual will produce a marriage by a date. Any astrologer who does that is selling certainty that the system does not contain.
Having this read in Mauritius
I read charts in person in Port Louis and across Mauritius, and online by phone or WhatsApp for families whose children are studying or working abroad, which is a common version of this question here. What I need is the date of birth, the exact time and the place, for the person concerned and, if a proposal is already in view, for the other chart as well.
If marriage has been delayed and nobody has explained why, that is the reading to ask for. Send your birth details and I will tell you which of the four points above is actually involved, and which period ahead carries the promise. If the question underneath is children rather than marriage, read santan yoga in the kundli. If the delay is really a question about a relationship the family has not accepted, read love marriage yoga in the kundli. If the answer is that nothing is wrong and the timing has not come, I will tell you that too, and the love and relationship guidance service is where that conversation continues.
Frequently asked questions
Four things are read together: the seventh house and its lord, the condition of Venus in a man’s chart or Jupiter in a woman’s, any affliction to those by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, and the mahadasha and antardasha running now. A delay usually appears when a chart is sound but the period that would bring marriage has not yet started. That is a timing finding, not a fault in the chart.
Saturn is the planet most often involved, because Saturn delays rather than denies. Saturn on the seventh house, on its lord, or on Venus, tends to push marriage later and often towards a more settled partner. Rahu on the same points scatters choices instead of delaying them, which reads differently in the chart and needs a different remedy.
Less often than people are told. Mangal Dosh describes friction rather than timing, and most charts that carry it also carry a cancellation. I have read many manglik charts where marriage came at the usual age and the dosha explained nothing about the delay. Check the cancellations before accepting the label.
In order: verify the birth time and the chart, then observe the practice connected to the planet actually involved, which is usually Saturn or Jupiter rather than Mars. A Navagraha Shanti or a planet-specific puja is appropriate when the chart shows a real affliction. Gemstones come last and only after a reading, because a stone worn for the wrong planet strengthens the wrong thing.
Yes. I read charts in person in Port Louis and across Mauritius, and online by phone or WhatsApp for families abroad. All that is needed is the date, exact time and place of birth. If the birth time is uncertain, say so at the start, because the seventh house can change with a few minutes.
