Navagraha Shanti puja, also written navgrah shanti puja or navagraha pooja, is worship of the nine grahas through prayer, mantra and offerings. In Hindu tradition it is performed to seek peace in relation to planetary influences, with havan where the chosen procedure includes it. It does not mean all nine planets in your kundli are harmful, and being advised to consider it is not a reason to be frightened.

I begin with the reason for the recommendation. A family should understand what the chart was said to show before arranging a ceremony. Through my pooja and rituals service, the reading, the proposed remedy and the preparation belong to the same conversation. Buying materials first and asking why afterwards reverses the useful order.

Which Nine Grahas Are Honoured in Navagraha Shanti Puja?

The word graha is broader than the modern astronomical word planet. The traditional group includes the Sun and Moon, five visible planets and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. The table identifies the names you may hear during the rite. It is not a list of nine separate problems in your life.

GrahaCommon English Name or Meaning
SuryaSun
ChandraMoon
MangalMars
BudhaMercury
Guru or BrihaspatiJupiter
ShukraVenus
ShaniSaturn
RahuNorth or ascending lunar node
KetuSouth or descending lunar node
These are the traditional Navagraha names. Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes, not additional physical planets; the table does not diagnose a dosha.

A graha’s name alone says little about its role in a particular chart. I read its position and relationships in the kundli, then consider the running dasha. The guide to the 12 houses in a kundli explains why the same planet cannot be interpreted without its place in the whole chart.

When Is a Full Navagraha Ceremony Appropriate?

Within the tradition, a full ceremony may be considered when the reading calls for worship addressing several grahas together. A focused planetary practice and a general devotional prayer are different choices. I do not treat the longer ceremony as automatically better. The recommendation should explain why this form of worship fits the question, and what simpler practice could be sufficient.

Before deciding, I check the birth information, examine the chart and ask what has actually been happening. If the time is uncertain, say so. A kundali analysis should make the reasoning understandable rather than leave you with an unexplained dosha label. Ordinary setbacks alone do not establish a planetary affliction.

Different rites should not be treated as interchangeable purchases. For example, ancestral observances discussed in the Pitra Dosh guide have their own purpose. A family should ask what is being recommended and why, rather than assume a broad planetary puja replaces every other duty or ceremony.

The useful question is not how large a puja you can arrange. It is whether the reason for that puja has been explained clearly, without fear or a promised result.

What Happens During the Puja?

The details vary with the ritual tradition and the scope agreed beforehand. This is a guide to the stages a family should understand, not a substitute for the pandit’s complete procedure. Ask which parts are included, especially whether the arrangement is mantra worship alone or includes havan.

  1. Clarify the intention. The sankalp states for whom the worship is offered and its purpose. Give the requested family details accurately and say when something, such as the gotra, is unknown.
  2. Prepare and invoke. The worship space and offerings are arranged, with Ganesh worship and the preliminary invocations according to the procedure being followed.
  3. Honour the grahas. The nine grahas are invoked and worshipped with the appropriate mantras and offerings. The form and extent of chanting should be clear before the ceremony starts.
  4. Complete the agreed rite. Where havan is included, offerings are made into the sacred fire under the pandit’s direction. Closing prayers, aarti and prasad complete the observance according to that tradition.

There is no need to pretend you understand every Sanskrit word. Ask for the meaning of the intention and the main stages. Following with attention is more valuable than worrying that an unfamiliar pronunciation will spoil the ceremony.

How Should a Family Prepare at Home?

Agree the materials list before buying anything. Flowers, fruit, grains, water and other offerings depend on the procedure; a generic shopping list may include items that are not needed. Confirm what the pandit brings and what the household supplies. Also discuss who will participate, seating, the available space and any practical limits at the property.

If havan is planned, establish a suitable, permitted place for the fire and keep the arrangements under the officiant’s supervision. Mention smoke sensitivity or difficulty sitting for a long time beforehand so participation can be planned sensibly. Do not make an uncomfortable family member feel that enduring distress proves devotion.

A muhurat belongs to the ceremony and the place where it happens. Do not copy a time printed for an Indian city into a Mauritian invitation. My Rahu Kaal guide explains the location issue. Confirm the agreed start, expected finish and preparation instructions together, rather than treating a weekday name as the whole timing decision.

What Benefits Can Be Promised Honestly?

Tradition describes Navagraha Shanti as seeking planetary peace and support through a difficult period. I do not promise a job, marriage, recovery or financial gain by a deadline. Worship can be part of a person’s spiritual life while practical decisions continue on their own evidence. Astrology works alongside medical care and never replaces it.

After the ceremony, ask which simple practice, if any, is appropriate to continue. A difficult week afterwards is not proof that the rite failed, and it is not an automatic reason to pay for another. Return to the original question and discuss what has changed before adding anything further.

Arranging Navagraha Shanti in Mauritius

I consult in person in Port Louis and across Mauritius, and online by phone or WhatsApp. Puja can be arranged at a home or business, or on your behalf when you cannot attend. Send your birth details and the reason the puja was suggested. I will first explain whether the chart supports that recommendation, then discuss the ceremony and preparation if it does.

Frequently asked questions

Navagraha Shanti puja is a Hindu ceremony honouring the nine grahas through invocation, mantra and offerings, with havan where included in the agreed procedure. Tradition understands it as a prayer for planetary peace. It is not a guarantee that a particular difficulty will disappear.

No. I first examine the complete chart, the running period and the question that brought you to the reading. A difficult period does not automatically require a full ceremony, and a focused practice may be more appropriate.

Simple devotional prayer at home is different from a formal Navagraha Shanti ceremony. Ask for a practice you understand and can follow consistently. For the formal rite, agree the procedure and preparation with the pandit rather than copying a long ritual from an unfamiliar recording.

I choose the muhurat for the intended ceremony and its location rather than prescribing one weekday for every family. The duration depends on the agreed chanting and whether havan is included. Confirm both the start time and the expected finish before making arrangements.

Yes. I perform pujas at homes and businesses across Mauritius, or on a client’s behalf when attendance is not possible. Share the birth details and the reason for the request first so the ceremony, if appropriate, follows the reading.
