A Vedic gemstone works by strengthening one planet in your birth chart. Each of the nine planets of Jyotish has a corresponding stone, and wearing that stone, natural, of proper weight and correctly energised, is said to amplify the planet’s influence in your life. The essential point, and the one most often skipped, is that the right gemstone is chosen from your whole kundali, not from your rashi or sun sign alone. The same stone that lifts one chart can burden another.
Gemstones are the most commercial corner of astrology, which is exactly why they need the most honesty. In twenty-plus years I have seen more harm from a confidently sold wrong stone than good from a casually chosen right one. This guide explains which stone belongs to which planet, why the chart decides, and how a gemstone is actually worn so that it does something.
The nine gemstones and their planets
The Navratna, the nine gems, map to the nine grahas. This is the fixed correspondence every recommendation starts from:
- Sun — Ruby (Manik). Vitality, authority, confidence, the father.
- Moon — Pearl (Moti). Emotional balance, calm, the mind and the mother.
- Mars — Red Coral (Moonga). Drive, courage, physical energy.
- Mercury — Emerald (Panna). Intellect, speech, business, communication.
- Jupiter — Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj). Wisdom, fortune, marriage for women, growth.
- Venus — Diamond (Heera). Love, luxury, art, relationships.
- Saturn — Blue Sapphire (Neelam). Discipline, career, the fastest-acting and most cautious stone.
- Rahu — Hessonite (Gomed). Ambition, sudden gains, protection from confusion.
- Ketu — Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia). Intuition, detachment, spiritual insight.
Why your rashi is not enough to choose a stone
A gemstone strengthens a planet, so the real question is never “what is my rashi” but “which planet does my chart want strengthened, and which must not be.” That is decided by three things a rashi label cannot tell you:
- House lordship. A planet that is a benefic for your ascendant is a fine stone to wear; the same planet can be a malefic for a different ascendant, where its stone does harm. Saturn is a yogakaraka (great benefic) for Taurus and Libra risings, and a difficult malefic for others.
- The running dasha. A stone helps most when its planet’s period is active or approaching. Wearing a stone for a planet whose dasha ended years ago often does little.
- Strength and affliction. Whether the planet needs support at all, and whether the chart can carry its amplification, depends on its placement, aspects and dignity.
A gemstone does not know your intentions. It only makes its planet louder. Make sure that planet is your friend first.
The three stones to be most careful with
Blue sapphire (Saturn), hessonite (Rahu) and cat’s eye (Ketu) are the most powerful gemstones and cause the most trouble when misjudged. Tradition recommends testing these on a trial basis, worn a few days against the skin, watching for disturbed sleep, unease or misfortune, before committing. A responsible astrologer will never sell you a Neelam on the spot; the stone acts fast in both directions, and its suitability has to be verified against the chart in a proper kundali analysis.
How to wear a gemstone correctly
A stone that is treated, underweight or worn without energising is jewellery, not a remedy. To actually influence its planet, the classical requirements are:
- Natural and untreated, free of major internal flaws, ideally with a lab certificate.
- Adequate weight, commonly three to six carats depending on the stone and the person’s constitution.
- Correct metal and finger: gold for the Sun, Jupiter and Mars stones, silver for the Moon and Venus, and each planet’s own finger, set so the stone touches the skin.
- Energised before wearing: purified and charged with the planet’s mantra on its weekday, then worn from that day.
- Never mix conflicting planets, for example a stone for Saturn alongside one for its enemy the Sun, without expert guidance.
Gemstone or puja? Choosing the right remedy
A gemstone is a continuous, passive support for one planet; a puja is a focused intervention for a specific dosha or period; and simple behavioural remedies, donation, mantra, fasting, cost nothing and suit many charts better than any stone. These are complements, not competitors. For a planet that is weak but friendly, a gemstone can be ideal; for an active dosha such as Mangal Dosh or a hard Sade Sati, a puja and discipline usually do more. The chart tells us which, and in what order.
Gemstone recommendation in Mauritius
If you are wondering which gemstone to wear, the right sequence is chart first, stone second. I read the kundali, identify which planet genuinely needs strengthening and whether your chart can carry its stone, and specify the exact weight, metal, finger and energising procedure, or advise honestly when a puja or a simple remedy would serve you better. Share your birth details for a reading, in person in Port Louis, across Mauritius, or online, before you buy any stone.
Frequently asked questions
A gemstone should be chosen from your whole birth chart, not from your rashi alone. The stone strengthens a particular planet, and which planet you want to strengthen depends on that planet’s role in your specific chart, its house lordship and your running dasha. Two people of the same rashi can need different stones, which is why a chart reading comes before any recommendation.
It can. A gemstone amplifies its planet, so strengthening a planet that is a malefic for your chart can intensify exactly the problems you hoped to solve. Blue sapphire (Saturn), hessonite (Rahu) and cat’s eye (Ketu) are the most powerful and the most often misused. This is why gemstones should follow a proper reading, never a generic rashi chart.
The stone should be natural and untreated, of adequate weight (commonly three to six carats depending on the stone), set so it touches the skin, in the correct metal and finger for its planet, and first energised with the planet’s mantra on the right weekday. It is then worn from that day. Details such as metal, finger and day differ by planet.
They are different tools. A gemstone is a continuous, passive strengthening of one planet; a puja is a focused ritual intervention. Some charts suit a gemstone, some suit a puja, many benefit from both, and some people are better served by simple behavioural remedies alone. The chart decides which, which is the honest reason not to buy a stone off a generic list.
