Mahadasha meaning is simple: it is a major planetary period in the Vimshottari dasha system. An antardasha, also called bhukti, is a shorter period within that major one. The periods give a timing framework for reading a kundli; they do not declare that a planet will make your whole life good or bad. I judge the planet in your own chart before saying what its period may bring.
People usually ask after a calculator says they have entered Rahu or Saturn mahadasha, often with an alarming prediction beside it. That label alone is not a reading. The first questions are which birth star starts your sequence, how much of its first period remained at birth, and what the current period lords actually rule in your chart.
What do mahadasha and antardasha mean?
Vimshottari divides a 120-year cycle among nine grahas. The mahadasha is the long period ruled by one graha. Inside it, all nine grahas take their turn as antardasha lords, starting with the mahadasha lord itself and continuing in the same fixed order. The major lord sets the wider subject; the subperiod lord helps show when a particular part of that subject becomes active.
The subperiods are not nine equal slices. Multiply the major lord’s allotted years by the subperiod lord’s allotted years and divide by 120. In a Venus mahadasha, for example, Jupiter’s antardasha is 20 times 16 divided by 120, or two years and eight months in the system’s year units. A calendar program may display a slightly different day at the boundary because of its year and time conventions. The planet labels remain the same.
How is the first mahadasha chosen from the birth star?
The Moon’s nakshatra at birth determines the lord of the first mahadasha. It does not mean you receive that lord’s full period from your birthday. The fraction of the nakshatra the Moon still has to cross gives the balance of the first period. If half the birth nakshatra remains, half its lord’s period remains. The birth star guide explains what a nakshatra is and why its ruling planet matters.
That is why I ask for date, time and place of birth before discussing a particular year. The Moon may cross into another nakshatra during an uncertain birth window, changing the first lord altogether. Even if it does not, its exact position changes the balance and shifts every later start date. Where the time is missing, birth time rectification can narrow the window from dated life events, but I do not present a rectified time as a recorded fact.
How long does each mahadasha last?
The classical Vimshottari sequence is fixed. It repeats from the lord of your birth nakshatra, so you do not necessarily begin with Ketu. These are the full allotments, not the balance you personally had at birth.
| Mahadasha lord | Full period | What I check in the kundli |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 years | Its house placement and the matters from which you are drawing away |
| Venus | 20 years | Its house lordship, relationships, resources and strength |
| Sun | 6 years | Its lordship, authority, father and public role |
| Moon | 10 years | Its lordship, home, mind and daily life |
| Mars | 7 years | Its lordship, initiative, conflict and property |
| Rahu | 18 years | Its placement, ruler, ambition and unfamiliar directions |
| Jupiter | 16 years | Its lordship, learning, counsel and children |
| Saturn | 19 years | Its lordship, work, duty and what takes time |
| Mercury | 17 years | Its lordship, trade, study and communication |
A planet’s period is a clock, not a sentence. Its meaning comes from the houses it rules and occupies in your chart.
What does the period running now actually show?
I start with the lagna and the houses the mahadasha lord owns. Then I look at its sign, house, strength and connections to the question. The antardasha lord is read the same way and against the major lord. A period connected to the seventh house can bring relationship questions; one connected to the tenth can bring work questions. Neither connection promises marriage or a job on its own. The relevant transit and the choices you make still matter.
For a career decision, the job change guide shows how the tenth house, the running dasha and slow transits are read together. This is more useful than a list saying Saturn is always harsh or Jupiter is always fortunate. The same Jupiter can rule helpful houses in one chart and difficult ones in another. If a calculator tells you to fear a whole 18-year Rahu period, ask what Rahu is connected to in your chart before accepting the claim.
How can you find which dasha is running?
- Confirm the birth details. Use the recorded date, time and place, including the correct local time for a birth outside Mauritius.
- Identify the Moon’s birth nakshatra. Its lord starts the sequence; the Moon’s remaining distance in that nakshatra sets the first balance.
- Follow the periods in order. Add each full allotment after the birth balance, then divide the current mahadasha among the nine antardasha lords.
- Read the chart before reading the label. Check both period lords against the houses, strength and question, then use transits to refine the window.
A free calculator can print the sequence, but check its birth time, time zone and sidereal settings before trusting a date. Two programs can also differ at a boundary because they use different year lengths or calculation conventions. If the recorded time is approximate, the honest answer is a broader window, not a more confident date.
Reading your dasha in Mauritius
A dasha reading is part of my kundali and birth chart analysis. I read charts in person in Port Louis and across Mauritius, and online by phone or WhatsApp. First I establish the birth details and the running periods; then I judge the question you actually have. Remedies are considered only if the chart shows a reason, and none is a guarantee of an outcome. If Jupiter and Rahu appear together in your chart, read what Guru Chandal Yoga means before accepting a remedy. Send your birth details and the question behind them so the period can be read in context.
Frequently asked questions
A mahadasha is a major planetary period in the Vimshottari timing system used in Vedic astrology. The Moon’s nakshatra at birth identifies the first period, and the portion of that nakshatra still to be crossed sets its remaining length. A mahadasha gives the broad timing; its antardashas divide that period into shorter chapters.
There is no single length. Each mahadasha contains nine antardashas, beginning with its own lord and following the fixed planetary order. The length is the mahadasha lord’s years multiplied by the antardasha lord’s years, divided by 120, so the nine subperiods together fill the parent period.
No planet gives the same result in every chart. I judge the period lord’s house ownership, placement, strength and connections to the question being asked, then read the antardasha lord and relevant transits. A difficult sounding planet may support a useful change, while a pleasant sounding one may rule an unhelpful house.
Sometimes the broad sequence can be estimated if the Moon stayed in one nakshatra throughout the possible birth window. The exact balance at birth, and therefore the start and end of later periods, still depend on the Moon’s position at the actual time. Where the time is uncertain, I mark the timing as uncertain and consider birth time rectification before giving a narrow window.
Yes. I read the chart in person in Port Louis and across Mauritius, and online by phone or WhatsApp. Send your date, time and place of birth and the decision or concern behind the question; the interpretation must be made against your own houses and the period running now.
Share your birth details and Acharya Amit Pandey will look at it personally.
