If you do not know your birth time, the chart is not lost, but it cannot be guessed either. Birth time rectification is the method of narrowing an uncertain time by testing candidate times against events that have already happened in your life, and keeping only the time that explains them. It is the first thing I do before any serious reading when the time is missing, approximate or remembered differently by two people in the same family.
This question reaches me most often in one of three forms: the certificate records no time at all, the certificate records a time that the family insists is wrong, or somebody remembers “around the evening”. All three are workable. What follows is what actually changes when the time is wrong, how the time is recovered, and where an honest rectification stops.
How much does a wrong birth time really change?
More than most people expect, and less than they fear. The planets in their signs barely move in a few hours. What moves is the lagna, and because every house is counted from the lagna, an error there moves the whole frame. A planet that belonged in the tenth house sits in the ninth, and a reading about work quietly becomes a reading about the father.
| What changes with the time | How fast it moves | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna, the ascendant | About one sign every two hours on average | The first house, and therefore the count of every house after it |
| Navamsa lagna, the D9 | About one navamsa every thirteen or fourteen minutes | The marriage reading and the judgement of the lagna lord’s strength |
| House cusps | Continuously, with the lagna | Which house a planet falls in when it sits near a boundary |
| Vimshottari dasha balance | Between three and nine months of the balance for each hour of error | When every period and sub period begins and ends |
| Moon’s nakshatra and pada | One nakshatra in about a day, one pada in about six hours | The dasha lord you start life with, and the pada based readings |
The dasha row is the one that decides whether rectification is worth doing. An hour of error moves the start of every period by months, and a long period such as Rahu’s eighteen years moves furthest. If somebody has told you that a difficult period begins next year, and your birth time is a guess, that date is a guess too. My guide to mahadasha and antardasha explains how that first balance is set. The same applies to the twelve houses of the kundli: they are only as reliable as the minute they are counted from.
A rectified birth time is a conclusion drawn from your life, not a fact recovered from the past. It should always be recorded as rectified, so that whoever reads the chart after me knows what they are holding.
What I ask for before rectification begins
Rectification is evidence work, and it fails when the evidence is thin. Before I start I want the date and place of birth exactly as recorded, the widest window the family will honestly commit to, and a set of dated events. The window matters as much as the events: “some time on that day” and “between four and six in the evening” are very different problems.
- The recorded facts first. Date, town and country of birth as they are written down, not as they are remembered.
- The honest window. The earliest and latest the time could be. Do not narrow it to please me; a false window produces a false chart.
- Four to six dated events. Marriage, the birth of a child, a bereavement in the immediate family, emigration or a long move, a surgery or serious illness, a clear change of work.
- Dates as exact as possible. The month and year is usable, the day is much better, and for a bereavement or a wedding the exact day is usually available.
- Anything already tried. If another astrologer has rectified your time before, tell me the result and the reasoning, so I am testing it rather than repeating it.
How the events are used to find the time
The principle is simple even though the work is slow. Each candidate lagna produces a different house frame and a different dasha sequence. A dated event should fall in a period whose lords are connected to the houses that govern it. A marriage should arrive under lords tied to the seventh house and should show in the navamsa. A bereavement of a parent should show in the periods tied to the fourth or the ninth. A move abroad should show in the twelfth.
One event agreeing proves nothing, because with enough candidate times something will always fit. What counts is several independent events of different kinds pointing at the same narrow band. When they do, the lagna is usually settled. When they disagree, the honest answer is that the window is still open, and I say so rather than choosing the time that makes the nicest chart.
The Moon is checked separately, because it changes nakshatra roughly once a day. On most days the birth star is the same across the whole window and is not in question; on the days it changes, the nakshatra itself becomes one of the things being decided, which is worth knowing if you have been told your birth star by somebody working from a date alone.
Where honest rectification stops
Tradition also records physical and temperamental correspondences for each lagna, and some astrologers rectify from appearance. I use it only as a weak confirmation at the end, never as the reason for a decision. It is too easy to see in a person the sign you have already decided on.
Sometimes the window cannot be closed. A person with no certificate, no family memory and few dated events may be left with two plausible lagnas. In that case I read what the chart supports and say plainly which parts of the reading depend on the unresolved choice. That is a smaller answer than the one you came for, and it is better than a confident answer built on an invented minute. Nothing here removes the value of a proper kundali analysis; it decides how much weight the timing part of it can carry.
If the reason you are asking is marriage, rectify before you match. Guna milan uses the Moon and can be run from a date, which is why the free kundli matching tool works without a time, but the deeper part of a marriage reading sits in the navamsa, and the navamsa changes every quarter of an hour.
Having your time rectified in Mauritius
I do this work in person in Port Louis and across Mauritius, and online by phone or WhatsApp for families abroad. Send the date and place of birth as recorded, the widest honest window, and your list of dated events, and I will tell you before we begin whether the evidence you have is enough to narrow it usefully. If it is not, I will say that too. Send your birth details and we will start with what is actually written down.
Frequently asked questions
Birth time rectification is the process of narrowing an uncertain birth time by testing candidate times against dated events that have already happened in your life. It is a reasoned estimate built from evidence, not a recovered record. A rectified time should always be described as rectified, never presented as the registered one.
Partly. The planets in their signs, the Moon’s nakshatra on most days and the broad picture of the chart can be read from the date and place alone. What cannot be read is anything that depends on the lagna: the houses, the navamsa and the timing of periods. So a reading is possible, and a precise prediction is not.
I ask for four to six dated events of different kinds, with the dates as exact as you can make them. Marriage, the birth of a child, a bereavement, a move to another country, a surgery and a clear change of work are the most useful, because each one tends to point at a different part of the chart.
Yes. I do this in person in Port Louis and across Mauritius, and online by phone or WhatsApp. For a birth outside Mauritius, give me the town, the country and the date exactly as they are recorded, because the chart is calculated for the place of birth and the time zone in force there on that day, not for where you live now.
That depends on how much evidence agrees. Narrowing an eight hour window to a single lagna is often achievable. Narrowing it to the minute usually is not, and anyone who offers you a time to the second from two or three events is telling you more than the method can support.
