Vastu Shastra is the classical Indian science of aligning a building with the eight directions and the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and space), so that the flow of energy inside it supports the people living there. In practice, good home Vastu comes down to placement: the main door to the north or east, the kitchen in the south-east, the master bedroom in the south-west, the pooja space in the north-east, and water and heavy storage kept to the right sides. Most defects are corrected without touching a wall.
Vastu is often sold as either superstition or as an excuse to rebuild half a house. It is neither. Treated sensibly it is a set of time-tested principles about light, air, orientation and the placement of daily activity, and the honest version costs you thoughtful arrangement, not a renovation loan. Here is how a home reads, direction by direction.
The main entrance
The door is where energy enters, so it carries the most weight. North, east and especially north-east facing entrances are ideal. Keep the entrance well-lit and unobstructed, let the door open fully clockwise into the home, and avoid shoe piles, dustbins or a cluttered shoe rack right at the threshold. For a south or south-west entrance, corrections such as a raised threshold, a nameplate, protective symbols and the right colours balance the flow without moving the door.
Kitchen: the fire corner
The kitchen belongs to Agni, fire, so the south-east is its natural home, with the cook facing east while working. The north-west is the acceptable second choice. The one placement to avoid is the north-east. Keep the stove and the sink apart rather than side by side, since fire and water are opposing elements, and store drinking water and the fridge toward the north or east side of the room.
Bedrooms
- Master bedroom, south-west. The heaviest, most grounded corner of the home suits the head of the family; it supports stability and rest. Sleep with the head pointing south or east, never north.
- Children and guests, north-west or south. The north-west suits movement and guests; the south suits settled sleep.
- Avoid the south-east for bedrooms where possible, as the fire energy there disturbs rest and, traditionally, harmony between couples.
- Mirrors and screens. Keep mirrors from facing the bed, and keep the bedroom free of a working television or desk where you can, so the room reads as rest, not activity.
Pooja room: the sacred north-east
The north-east, the Ishanya corner, is the most sacred direction and the ideal place for the home shrine. Face east or north while praying, keep the idols slightly away from the wall, and keep the space clean, uncluttered and never below a staircase or sharing a wall with a toilet. A small, well-kept north-east shrine does more than a large, neglected one anywhere else.
Vastu is not about a perfect house. It is about placing the right activity in the right direction, and keeping the north-east light.
Water, toilets and storage
- Water elements (underground tank, borewell, water feature) sit best in the north or north-east.
- Overhead tanks and heavy storage belong in the south-west, the corner meant to carry weight.
- Toilets are best in the north-west or south-east, and kept clear of the north-east and the exact centre (the Brahmasthan) of the home.
- The centre of the home should stay open and uncluttered; avoid heavy furniture, beams or a toilet at the Brahmasthan.
Common Vastu flaws and simple corrections
Very few homes are textbook-perfect, and they do not need to be. The frequent issues, and their non-structural fixes, are usually:
- North-east toilet or kitchen: keep it scrupulously clean, use sea salt to absorb negativity, and shift daily activity where possible; a full move is rarely required.
- Cluttered or dark entrance: clear it, light it, and add a healthy plant or auspicious symbol.
- Wrong sleeping direction: simply turn the bed so the head points south or east.
- Heavy north-west or missing corners: balanced with colour, lighting, mirrors and metal or crystal remedies rather than construction.
